Leaves never fail to fascinate me, but the colours of Puhutukawa tree leaves are fascinating. They are leathery, tough, shaped like little wakas or canoes, and keep urging me to collect them. The colours can range from green, yellow or red to orange, dark green and even maroon. Puhutukawa are evergreen trees, so these coloured leaves can be found under these trees at any time of the year. In New Zealand it is know as the Christmas Tree for the bright red blooms around Christmas.
Renowned for its vibrant colour and its ability to survive even perched on rocky, precarious cliffs, it has found an important place in New Zealand culture for its strength and beauty and is regarded as a chiefly tree (rākau rangatira) by Māori. – Wikipedia
